1st Day Enkhuizen (Embarkation) - Medemblik
Individual journey to Enkhuizen. Embarkation and check in on board from 2 pm close to the railway station near the beautiful centre of Enkhuizen. Once everyone has unpacked and settled in, the skipper joins the guests for an aperitif before giving a short briefing about the journey, details about the ship and relevant safety measures to be taken on board. In the evening, there is time to take a stroll through the historical centre of Enkhuizen, a quaint town that was home to the Dutch merchant fleet during the Dutch Golden Age. The first night on board is spent in Enkhuizen on the western bank of the IJsselmeer.
2nd Day Medemblik
Roundtrip approx. 28 oder 40 km
Sailing: Medemblik – Den Oever – Texel
Your bikes will be fitted in the morning, and you will then set off on your first cycle tour. As on almost all cycling days on this trip, the guides split up and you can choose between a longer or shorter cycling stage. The highlight of both routes is the picturesque town of Twisk. This former peat mining town has always been prosperous and is still in an untouched historical state. After the cycle tour, the route continues to Texel, the largest Dutch island in the North Sea. If the weather does not cooperate, an overnight stay in Den Oever may be necessary.
3rd Day Texel
Roundtrip up to 49 km
The island of Texel – a real dream destination for cyclists – is known for its varied landscape and picturesque villages. Your guides will take you on a tour around the largest Dutch North Sea Island. On the way, you will visit the seal sanctuary “Ecomare”. While the foundation’s main task is to save birds and seals, it also aims to inform visitors from all over the world about the special features of the island and the local wildlife.
4th Day Texel – Terschelling
Sailing Day approx. 5 – 6 h
Today you can enjoy a longer sail to the island of Terschelling, weather and tide permitting. As you sail through Wadden Sea, keep a lookout for seals relaxing on the sandbanks. There is a good chance of spotting seals, which feel particularly at home here. During the sail, a bountiful lunch is served on board. In the afternoon, the ship arrives on Terschelling. The island is home to a number of picturesque villages situated between the polder and sand dunes that stretch along its 30 km- long-expanse. No dinner will be served on board today to allow you to explore the harbour of the beautiful island with its many nice restaurant and pubs.
5th Day Terschelling
Roundtrip approx. 42 km
Sailing: Terschelling – Harlingen
While the previous day was all about sailing, today is all about cycling. Terschelling has plenty to offer its cycle tourists: nature and culture, 44 mi./70 km of cycling tracks and four beautiful villages. West Terschelling is the largest village on the island and has several lovely shops and pubs. The standout landmark on the island is the 400-year-old lighthouse “Brandaris” that can be seen from well off in the distance. The heathland of “Boschplaat” is also well worth exploring, a landscape dotted with mudflats, beaches and dunes. If you’re lucky, you may even spot ducks, black-winged stilts, large colonies of spoonbills and great black-backed gulls. After a long day of cycling, you can relax once more onboard the ship. In the late afternoon, the ship crosses the Wadden Sea to Harlingen, the most important harbour city in the province of Friesland.
6th Day Harlingen – Franeker – Makkum
approx. 48 or 58 km
Today’s cycle tour starts after breakfast in Harlingen. Via Franeker, with its famous planetarium by Eise Eisinga, you cycle on through the wonderfully extensive Frisian countryside, dotted with small villages, to Makkum on the eastern shore of the Ijsselmeer. If you want to take the long cycle tour, you will also come to Bolsward, one of the eleven Frisian towns.
7th Day Makkum – Stavoren
approx. 32 or 49 km
Sail to Enkhuizen
From Makkum you cycle to Stavoren. The short route takes you via the old trading town of Hindeloopen. The first Frisian skating museum is also located here. The Dutch are a nation particularly fond of ice sports, which is impressively demonstrated in this museum. The long tour takes you along several lakes of the Frisian Lake district and reveals a landscape characterized by water worlds. From Stavoren, the ship sets course for Enkhuizen at the end of the day.
8th Day Enkhuizen (Disembarkation)
Disembarkation after breakfast until 9.30 am. A beautiful journey full of new experiences has come to an end. Individual journey home or extended stay.

Accommodation

Leafde Fan Fryslan (Tall Ships)

The impressive three-mast barkentine, Leafe fan Fryslan, was originally a freight ship on the Baltic Sea. In 2006, it was converted into a luxury three-mast passenger ship. The luxury vessel hosts comfortable guest cabins and a classy interior.

The saloon, in nautical flair, is where the meals are served and beverages can be ordered at the accompanying bar. The on-board library allows guests to browse through a selection of novels, whilst enjoying their favorite drop. The wheelhouse also has a leisurely sofa corner: it is here and on deck that you have the best views over the water.

Arrival by plane

The best international airport to use for this trip is Schiphol. Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is accessible from virtually all major airports in Europe.

Your flight can be organized as soon as we have confirmed that your tour is taking place.

From the airport to the Central Station

It’s very easy to find public transport at Schiphol Airport with the train, buses and taxis just a 3-minute walk from the terminal. Simply collect your bags, head to the arrival’s hall, and follow the signs. Trains run regularly and only take about 20 minutes from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal. You can buy a ticket in the central arrival hall at the airport.

Arrival by car

Address for navigation system:

Dirck Chinaplein, 1601 GW Enkhuizen

Parking Options

There is free parking at the railway station Enkhuizen (cars only). The carpark Ossenmarkt is centrally located and is only a short walk away from the harbour.

The Dock Gependam – for luggage drop-off only

Important information

Spoken language

Due to our international audience all Islandhopping tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.

Itinerary changes

The planned itinerary is subject to change due to nautical, technical, meteorological reasons, or any other unforeseen circumstances. Should the conditions render a planned sailing route unsafe, the captain reserves the right to change course. While some adventure and spontaneity are to be expected in every Sail & Bike tour, the departure and arrival days and location (Enkhuizen) are fixed. For the rest of the time, the captain decides day by day on the best route and discusses the options with his guests. The crew do whatever they can to run the program according to plan and to offer you a fascinating, varied, and active week, in which both nature and culture play a major part. It is however possible that departure times, the time spent on the water, and even the order of the program itself will have to be adjusted. So, enjoy the experience and the adventure and let the elements lead the way! Wherever possible, the ship will sail under full sail. You are more than welcome to help the crew sail and steer the ship. No sailing experience is required.

Requirements

Level 1 - 2

Easy tours in mostly flat stages of 28 to 65 km. The daily cycle tours are fully guided. On days with two cycle tour options, you can choose the longer or the shorter option. Not all of the highlights mentioned are visited during the shorter cycle tour. There are hardly any longer and steeper climbs on this tour, but you can expect a hilly landscape and constant ups and downs. Depending on the wind direction, you should also expect a strong headwind. A boat trip can be taken at any time instead of a cycle tour.

Requirement to wear a helmet

Helmet use is mandatory on all cycle tours (even if cyclists are not obligated by law to wear a bike helmet in the Netherlands). You can either bring your own well-fitting bicycle helmet or rent a helmet on board (included in the price).

Bringing children

We believe that only children with a good physical condition and previous bicycle tour experience and a minimum age of 10 are able to master the cycle tours with their own strength.

For the best tour experience with children, we recommend our Multi-Adventure tours in Croatia or Greece. We are convinced that these itineraries provide the best all-round experience for each individual family member when travelling as a family.

Bringing private bikes

You are allowed to bring your own bike (spaces are limited: trekking bike 14 euros / e-bike 28 euros). If you are planning on bringing your own bike, please inform us of the category type (hybrid bike/e-bike) in advance.

Liability disclaimer:

If you bring your private bike, you do so at your own risk. The owner of the boat, the crew, the tour guides, and the tour operator will not be held liable for any damages to the bike or for the theft thereof which may occur during your time on tour.

Conditions of use & liability for rental bikes

If you do not bring your own bike, you can rent a hybrid bike or e-bike along with a pannier bag for the duration of the Sail & Bike tour. Except for the time when the (e-)bike is on the deck of ship, you are responsible and liable for your rental bike and accessories for the duration of the rental period. This means you should always lock your bicycle when it is parked on land, and you take the pannier bag with you. It is of great importance that you pay attention to and follow the instructions given by the tour leader where and how to park your bike. In case of damage to or theft of the bike, the costs will be charged to you.

Luggage

Please bring your personal belongings in foldable travel bags. Please avoid hard protective cases. They will be too heavy to store within your cabin.

Catering

Full board (7 x breakfast, 5 x packed lunches/1 x lunch on board, 6 x dinner on board)

Noise on board

Please do not forget that the ship is your hotel as well as a machine, which has to be maintained and operated – day and night. A certain level of noise is therefore inevitable.

Who is in charge of the organisation?

Important note: All Holland tours offered here are operated by Boat Bike Tours and differ from our regular Islandhopping tours.
